"Rental Car New Zealand Tour Video - From Maori Culture To Penguins And A Helicopter Glacier Landing"
A rental car New Zealand trip, whether in a car or a hired camper, is one of the more popular ways to see New Zealand for independent individual travellers who prefer to do things on their own rather than on an organised coach tour. For vehicle hire, New Zealand has plenty to offer, and in the area of car hire New Zealand leaves nothing to be desired in terms of price options or availability, whether it's a car rental in Christchurch you're looking for or car rental in Auckland. For car hire Wellington, at the northern end of the Cook Strait ferry connection, is a good place to pick up or drop off a vehicle.
In the combined video and slide show below we accompany a Californian couple as they travel through the North Island and South Island in a simple campervan, and experience with them a typical cross-section of what a visitor to the country sees when they do the trip on their own in a hire car or a motorhome rental in New Zealand. (We also see a lot of our hosts but hey, it's their show!)
The trip begins in the North Island with Maori culture, getting to know sheep and milking a cow before going underground exploring caves.
"Zorbing", rolling down a hill inside a huge plastic ball - a typically New Zealand pastime - is followed by panoramic views of the mountains of the volcanic plateau and a walk on the Tongariro Crossing before we switch to a completely different kind of mountain - Mount Victoria in Wellington.
Crossing with the Interislander Cook Strait ferry to the South Island - some prefer to leave their rental car in Wellington and get another one on disembarking - the journey continues, with some relaxed sea kayaking near Nelson.
Down the wild West Coast we go to the aptly named Pancake Rocks, otherwise known as Punakaiki, then an exhilarating helicopter ride following the course of a mighty glacier and the thrill of actually landing on its snowbound upper reaches.
Before long - after an extremely brief stop in what looks like Queenstown's shopping precinct! - we are on the east coast of the South Island, where our hosts give us some rather different perspectives of the famous Moeraki Boulders.
Further up the coast we watch in amused curiosity as a lone penguin waddles up the shore, the waves at his "heels", before we reach the "garden city" of Christchurch. (Incidentally, many visitors to New Zealand fly into this city and pick up their hire car in Canterbury instead of starting in Auckland.)
Our tour ends finally as we join a large pod of dolphins and a majestic whale off the coast of Kaikoura, who ends the video with a dramatic wave of his tail as he (or is it a she?) dives down into the depths of the Pacific Ocean. All in all, this visual show gives you a good idea of what to expect when you do a tour by camper or rental car in New Zealand!
